Timothy Clark: The 4 Stages of Psychological Safety
Psychological safety is the foundation of great company culture. Research has shown it’s the #1 variable in team performance, the key ingredient for creating inclusive environments, and the heart of high-performing, innovative teams. When organizations have high levels of psychological safety there are no hidden pockets of toxicity, employees initiate improvements with little-to-no prodding, and teams are exceeding expectations. Where there are high levels of psychological safety, there high levels of engagement and retention. Pychological safety is not a shield from accountability. It’s not niceness, coddling, consensus decision-making, unearned autonomy, or just political correctness. Psychological safety is a culture of rewarded vulnerability. It’s about the quality of your interactions. Its 4 stages are Inclusion Safety (Can I be my authentic self?), Learner Safety (Can I grow?), Contributor Safety (Can I create value?) and Challenger Safety (Can I be candid about change ?).
